The most formal suit you can own
Black is the color men reach for first and should probably buy second. It is the most formal suit in the wardrobe and the least flexible, and understanding that distinction is the difference between a black suit that earns its place and one that hangs unworn for two years.
Worn correctly, nothing else comes close. A well-cut black suit under evening light removes every distraction and leaves only the line of the shoulder and the fit through the waist. There is nowhere to hide, which is exactly why it works when it works.
Varrison black suits are cut in a tailored fit and arrive ready to wear, made from high quality fabric.
When black is the right answer
- Evening events: black comes into its own after dark, when daylight is not flattening the cloth.
- Black-tie optional: a black suit with a black tie is the correct interpretation when you do not own a tuxedo.
- Funerals and memorials: the one occasion where black is not merely acceptable but expected.
- Formal city weddings: particularly evening ceremonies and receptions in enclosed venues.
When to choose something else
Black is a poor daytime suit. In direct sunlight it flattens, photographs harshly and reads more severe than intended. It is also the weakest choice for a job interview in most industries, where navy or charcoal signal competence without formality. And a black suit at a daytime outdoor wedding will always look slightly like the wearer came from somewhere else.
If this is your first suit, buy navy. Black should be the second or third.
Wearing it
A crisp white shirt is the safest and strongest pairing. Black leather shoes, always. Brown shoes with a black suit is one of the few genuine mistakes in menswear. Keep accessories restrained; the suit is already making the statement and anything loud fights it.
