The colors that work

Navy and charcoal carry a professional wardrobe, in that order. They are appropriate in every industry and at every level, they read as competent rather than showy, and they are quiet enough to wear repeatedly without anyone noticing the repetition. Mid gray joins them as a reliable third. Between two or three suits in these colors, you can go a full week without obviously wearing the same thing.

How much formality

The right level depends on the industry. Law, finance and consulting still expect a proper dark suit, solid or with the subtlest of patterns. Business casual and creative fields allow lighter colors, texture and separates, a navy jacket with contrasting pants, an olive suit, a textured cloth. Read the room you are actually in rather than the one you imagine.

Building a work rotation

Two suits is the practical minimum for regular wear, three is comfortable. Navy and charcoal first, then a mid gray or a subtle pattern such as birdseye or a fine graph check for variation that does not read as a different suit. Rotating suits rather than wearing one repeatedly also makes each last considerably longer, because cloth needs time to recover between wears.
