A plain suit is the most formal, most versatile and most useful thing you can own. No pattern means nothing to coordinate around, nothing to date, and nothing to limit where the suit can go. Every wardrobe should start here and most should stay here for the first two suits.

Why plain first

Patterns narrow a suit’s range. A windowpane check is memorable, which is a problem if you need to wear the same suit twice in one week to the same office. A solid navy suit is invisible in the useful sense: nobody registers that you wore it on Tuesday and again on Friday.

Plain cloth is also the easiest to accessorize. Any shirt, any tie, any pattern you like, with no risk of two patterns fighting each other.

Which color

Navy first, charcoal second. Between those two you are covered for interviews, weddings, funerals, business and evenings out. Light gray and mid blue are strong third purchases for daytime and warm weather. Black is more formal and less flexible than most men expect.
