The suit most men skip, and shouldn’t

Brown is the most underused color in menswear and the one that most reliably makes a man look like he dressed himself rather than following instructions. It sits outside the navy-gray-black default, which is exactly the point: it signals ease rather than obligation.

The catch is that brown is a warmer, softer color and therefore a less formal one. It is not an interview suit and not a funeral suit. It is a suit for the situations in between, and there are more of those than most men realize.

Varrison brown suits are cut in a tailored fit and arrive ready to wear, made from high quality fabric.

The shades, and what they are for

  • Tan and camel: the lightest and most relaxed. Spring and summer daytime, outdoor weddings, resort settings.
  • Mid brown: the most versatile of the family. Works year round and dresses up or down easily.
  • Chocolate and espresso: the deepest and most formal browns. Strong for autumn and winter, and for evening events where you want warmth without severity.

Wearing it

Brown is the one suit color where shoe choice genuinely constrains you. Black shoes with a brown suit almost never works. The contrast is too hard and reads as a mistake. Stay in the brown family, and pick a shade clearly darker or clearly lighter than the suit rather than one that nearly matches. Suede is excellent here.

For shirts, white, cream and light blue all work. Brown is also unusually good with warm accessory colors that would clash against a cooler suit, including muted green and rust.

When to wear it

Autumn and winter weddings, particularly rustic and outdoor venues. Business casual offices and creative industries. Daytime events where navy would feel corporate. Any occasion where you want to look considered rather than institutional.
