The notch lapel is the standard on single-breasted suits, and it is standard for a reason. The name comes from the small V-shaped cut where the collar meets the lapel, a step that breaks up the line and keeps the jacket looking relaxed rather than formal. If you own one suit, it almost certainly has notch lapels, and it should.

Notch or peak?

A notch lapel is the everyday standard, more relaxed and more versatile. A peak lapel points upward toward the shoulder and reads as more formal and more assertive. For a single, do-everything suit, choose notch. Add peak when you want a second suit with more presence, or on a double-breasted jacket, where peak is the traditional cut.
